Somaliland Authorities Close Opposition Radio Station
Somaliland regional administration authorities on Monday (November 17th) took Hargeisa-based opposition radio station Baadi-Goob FM off the air, Somalia's Garowe Online reported.
Police have arrested four broadcasters and intend to bring charges against them in court, said Somaliland Chief of Police Brigadier General Abdullahi Fadal Iman, who announced the station's closure during a press conference.
Security forces also confiscated radio equipment, Somalia's Qaran News reported.
Somaliland authorities recently announced that new media legislation will go into effect this month, introducing stringent new licensing procedures for journalists and media outlets that media advocates say are too restrictive of the press.

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – Three journalists are in police custody for reasons related to operating a clandestine radio station in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.
The three though most like four were arrested on the eve of 17th Nov after police in the capital located the studios of BAADI GOOB an unlicensed radio station transmitting out of October estate for a couple of months mostly anti-establishment programs and news.
According to sources within the police force the three journalists caught red handed at the studios are helping with investigations pertaining to the person/people or organization/s behind the station whose secret broadcasts have been curtailed in a police operation that took months of investigations to locate the studios and antennae utilizing high performance signal analyzers.
Though yet to be confirmed information indicates that among journalists in custody or manning the now defunct Radio BAADI GOOB are ministry of Information employees.
Similarly other sources indicate that police investigators are pursuing a major Somaliland telecommunication company that alleged hosted the antennae of Radio BAADI GOOB on one of its towers in Hargeisa with close proximity to the studios in October Estate.
Ironically, Kulmiye, the ruling Somaliland political party was the first to operate a clandestine radio station in the country which broadcasted under the name HORYAAL during the 2010 presidential elections is greatly attributed with the massive win by president Silanyo through anti then president Dahir Rayale Kahin and ruling party of UDUB.
Despite enjoying the services and subsequently accrued benefits of HOORYAAL, the radio station that ceased broadcasting immediately upon end of the 2010 presidential elections is not Kulmiye party but privately owned.

BURAO (Somalilandsun) - The Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance Hon. Abdillahi Mohammed Dahir U'kuse inaugurated the public national radio service, Hargeisa Radio, in Burao late on Friday.
The Hargeisa Radio FM services will for the first time be audible and heard in Togdeer and central parts of the republic in such releigh modulation. The FM services are swiftly accessed more than the SW ones and their decibels are better and highly defined.
In a well attended function marking the occasion at the Burao state lodge, Hon. U'kuse underscored the importance of the service noting that the need of the FM station was direly warranted.
"The region was utterly in need of this FM station and we are happy to inaugurate it", said the minister.
The minister took the occasion to lambast the oppositionists, bringing them to their senses.
He said "The handful opposition rhetoric as may well be put to rest by the developmental steps the government has taken".
He cited the doubling of the salaries of the civil services and the armed forces, the construction and upgrading of roads within towns and upcountry links, the building of government offices and their headquarters etcetera as but some of the gigantic achievements made by the state.
He underpinned the fact that when the government made such developmental steps, detractors had no say, and as such what the oppositionists blabber about held no water at all.
Amongst those present who also addressed the assembled audience were the regional governor Mr. Mohammed Muse Dirie, the Commerce Deputy Minister, eminent personalities and area businessmen.
